Planning for the Future: A New Cemetery for Timaru
At Perspective Consulting, we’re proud to be playing a leading role in shaping one of Timaru’s most significant long-term community projects – the development of a new cemetery site at Claremont Road.
With the existing Timaru Cemetery nearing capacity, the Timaru District Council has taken steps to secure land that will serve the community for the next century. The Claremont Road site is more than three times the size of the current cemetery and has been carefully selected for its suitability, accessibility, and ability to grow with the district’s needs.
Our Role in the Project
Perspective Consulting has been involved from the very beginning, providing leadership and direction at each stage:-
- Project planning – preparing a structured roadmap to guide the process.
- Commissioning consultants – bringing together the right expertise to ensure robust and balanced outcomes.
- Community and stakeholder engagement – preparing a consultation plan and consulting with iwi, neighbours, and the wider community to shape the vision.
- Landscape plan consultation – working alongside Glasson Huxtable Landscape Architects to prepare a draft plan with the theme of a “cemetery within a park.”
Looking ahead, we will continue to lead the process through the Notice of Requirement and the relevant resource consent applications, ensuring the project progresses with both technical rigour and community values at its core.
A Long-Term Vision for Timaru
The new cemetery is more than just a response to limited space – it’s an intergenerational investment in Timaru’s future. The plan allows for:- 50 to 100 years of staged development
- Flexibility for diverse cultural needs as the community evolves
- Integration of open parkland and farmland in the undeveloped areas
- Potential for future facilities, such as a crematorium, if required
